The
beautiful town of Gallipoli stands on the south-eastern tip of the
Italian peninsula. It’s a charming little place built on an
island of limestone connected by a XVII century bridge.
In the historical centre we can admire old typical white houses
that evoke an oriental sytle, the church of the “Confraternite”,
rich in works of art, and the catedral of Saint Agata.
Strolling through the narrow and winding lanes it is possible to
observe very particular houses and courtyards, typical examples
of local building. Some wonderful churches with facades of a native
sandstone called “carparo” gleam in the sunset; and
the Greek fountain, built during the Roman period and restored in
1547, is one of the most beautiful monuments .
Its
jagged coastline of sheer limestone cliffs is studded with colourful
marine caves, and its prehistoric sites are worth a visit. Direct
on the coastline rises the magnificent castle “Gallipolino”,
built by Carlo I d´Angio in 1281. Many charming fishing villages
and an unpolluted natural environment, a turquoise coloured sea
and the mixture of perfumes (rosemary, myrthe and juniper) pull
thousands of visitors every year and make of Gallipoli an attractive
tourist resort.
